Thirst Tips for Dialysis Patients

Kidney failure is a critical condition in which your renal fails to work as it is supposed to. The situation is so devastating that it may push you to the edge of being bed-ridden. Besides, hazardous levels of fluids may accrue in the bloodstream that makes the blood unfit for usage by the other organs. To continue life, doctors suggest dialysis or organ transplant to cleanse the blood and to facilitate the proper functioning of the other parts.
Dialysis is a surgical treatment to remove toxins from the blood by making access to your blood vessels. The filtered blood is then returned to the bloodstream after purification, thus the dialysis performs functions as done by your healthy kidneys.
At the stage of kidney failure, when you are taking dialysis, your bodily requirements change. Since your kidneys can not eliminate waste at this stage, you need to work on your diet to make the most out of your dialysis treatment.
Those dependent on dialysis need to restrict their fluid intake to avoid any kind of burden on their kidneys. Taking fluid in excess, can raise blood pressure, damage your heart, become the reason for Edema, and make the process of dialysis uneasy for you. So, it is important for patients to get hands on thirst control to avoid later complications.

For your reference, we have shared with you, some tips to sway or quench your thirst:

  • Try using small glasses such as juice glasses during your meals. If you use small glasses, you will have less amount of water to drink or if you want to use larger glasses, try not to fill them completely.
  • Restrict the amount of salt or sodium in your meal. This might have been guided by your doctor because salt makes your body hold on to water which will increase your thirst.
  • Eating hard candies like mints, lemon drops, or sour balls lubricates your mouth and helps decrease thirst. This will prevent you from drinking too much water but if you are a diabetic patient, ask your doctor whether you can have candies or not.
  • Take sips but don’t quaff. Try to enjoy whatever you are drinking and make it your experience than merely believing that fluid is just your thirst quencher.
  • You can use a refreshing mouthwash at times when you feel thirsty.
  • Adopt good oral hygiene habits, such as cleaning your tongue, using good toothpaste to prevent dry mouth feeling.
  • Manage your fluid intake by carefully planning water intake in advance. For instance, if you have to attend a party or a function at night, try to decrease your fluid intake in the afternoon that day. This will help you to maintain a balance between your enjoyment and health condition.
  •  You can also partition your water intake into manageable parts. For instance, if your doctor recommended 24 ounces per day, then you can take 6 ounces at 4 different times according to your convenience.

It is necessary to consult your doctor before making any modification in your dietary habits as your diet plan solely depends on the severity of your condition.
