Nephrotic Syndrome and Nephritic Syndrome may sound similar but they carry a huge difference. The former is the loss of protein in the urine and the latter is the loss of protein and blood in urine in abnormal counts.
Their symptoms are interrelated and can be confusing if the person is not aware of the terms. This is why we will be discussing how nephritic syndrome and nephrotic syndrome are different from one another.
Nephrotic syndrome is the presence of protein in urine in high amounts. Nephrotic syndrome is a disorder that damages the Glomeruli and Nephrons of kidneys. This becomes one of the reasons why kidney stops performing their functions properly.
Nephritic syndrome is a kidney disorder that occurs when the kidneys suffer from nephritis. Nephritis is a condition where the kidneys get inflamed or when the Glomerulus and tubules of kidneys get inflamed.
What are the signs and symptoms of nephritic syndrome?
Following are the symptoms of nephritic syndrome:
• Hematuria
• Proteinuria
• Hypertension
• Visionary problems
• Azotemia
• Oliguria
• Oedema
What are the signs and symptoms of nephrotic syndrome?
Following are the symptoms of having Nephrotic syndrome:
• Pale fingernails.
• Dull hair.
• Intolerance of food.
• Food allergies.
• Restlessness
• Discomfort.
• Proteinuria
• High cholesterol levels.
• Albuminuria.
• Edema or Oedema.
• Foamy urine.
• Sudden weight gain.
• Lost appetite.
The symptoms are similar to one another but still, few factors vary. Despite being two different disorders, these both are kidney disorders.
Kidneys are the sensitive organs of the human body; they filter the waste and toxins out from the body. Kidneys have tiny filters naming Glomeruli; these are particularly responsible for converting the wastes and toxins in the form of urine.
What are the causes of Nephrotic syndrome?
Following are the causes of nephrotic syndrome:
• FSGS or Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis
• Membranous glomerulonephritis
• Little changes in diseases
• Blockage in blood vessels of kidneys
• Diabetes
• Lupus
• Build up of a specific protein type
• Overconsumption of drugs and narcotics and steroids.
What are the causes of nephritic syndrome?
Following are the causes of nephritic syndrome:
• IgA nephropathy.
• Glomerulonephritis
• Hemolytic-Schonlein purpura
• Goodpasture syndrome
• Infective Endocarditis
What are the complications that can occur during and after these diseases?
Following are the complications that are associated with both the disorders:
• Clotting: Adequate amounts of proteins help in the prevention of blood clots but when a situation like this syndrome occurs there are increased risks of having blood clots.
• High cholesterol levels: When the blood purification is interrupted by the damaged Glomerulus in kidneys, the risks of cholesterol releasing in the blood get higher that leads to multiple complications related to the heart.
• High blood pressure: The waste and toxins increase in the blood when the kidneys are damaged, because of which the blood put an extra effort to transport from kidneys to heart. This scenario leads to the problem of high blood pressure.
• Sudden weight loss: Even if don’t compromise on your diet, loss of protein can make you lose a lot of weight and will make you look malnutrition.
• Reduced count of RBCs: When the kidneys are damaged, not only the waste and protein leaks from the body, other important nutrients, and components. When the count of red blood cells decreases, there are increased chances of getting caught by Anemia.
What could be the appropriate treatment for both the disorders?
The treatment is almost the same but still varies by the prognosis and the complication level during the disorder. Following are the basic guidelines provided by Karma Ayurveda to help in easing the disorder:
Dietary Changes: According to Ayurveda, diseases are incited by the improper dietary habits a person carries. And as discussed above, loss of protein in blood and body leads to the condition of Nephrotic syndrome. So, in such a case it is important to keep a good protein-rich diet in your eating rituals. Following are the foods that are recommended to eat during the Ayurvedic treatment of Nephrotic Syndrome:
• Tuna fish
• Beans
• Peanut butter
• Soybeans
• Apples
• Watermelon (without seeds)
• Sapodilla
• Lettuce
• Tomatoes (without seeds)
• Boiled potatoes
• Boiled rice
• Whole grains
• Cottage cheese
• Tofu
• Milk
• Butter
Foods that are restricted according to an Ayurvedic diet chart for this syndrome:
• Processed cheeses
• High-sodium meats (bologna, ham, bacon, sausage, hot dogs)
• Frozen foods
• Canned foods
• Pickled vegetables
• Salted potato chips, popcorn, and nuts
• Salted bread
Guidelines that should be considered while consuming foods and beverages during the Ayurvedic treatment of Nephrotic Syndrome:
• Watch out your protein intake: A Nephrotic syndrome patient can only consume up to 1 gram per kg of protein in a day. If your nephrologist is recommending more or less than this, follow his advice. He knows the current status of your body.
• Reduce the intake of sodium: The limit of sodium intake during the day is 400mg per meal. Also, replace common salts with rock salts. Rock salts have a low percentage of sodium comparatively.
• Consume homemade food: Start preparing your food at home and use oils such as olive & coconut oil.
Lifestyle changes: There is no hard and fast rule or turning the table upside down. Ayurvedic treatment manages the daily activities in such a way that it helps in keeping you fit with exercises, yoga, and meditation. Following are the lifestyle changes that are recommended in an Ayurvedic treatment:
• Get up one hour before the sunrise. Take a bath.
• Practice yoga poses like Pranayam, cobra pose, monkey pose and wind relieving pose.
• Perform mild exercises, just like stretching and bending.
• Don’t perform exercises that include weight lifting and a lot of strength.
• Avoid the consumption of painkillers and anti-biotic.
• Avoid consuming alcohol; this will damage the condition of kidneys even more.
• Quit smoking already, the smoke that enters the human body blocks the blood vessels and lead to certain medical conditions.
